Despite our imperfection, God expects us to be perfect in our daily lives, in our dealings with other fellow men, and in our fellowship with God Himself. Yet, you wonder how this can be made practical on account of our shortcomings. As human, I do sympathize with you when cringing at the possibility of perfection. Notwithstanding our weakness, this God is powerful enough to bring us back to sinless life (that Adam and Eve had before sin entered our world). Actually, for us to become perfect, we need to let go of self. Again, you wonder how this is possible with our terrible flaws. Thankfully, our miraculous God promises to do so for each one of us provided that we are willing to die to self. On one occasion, Jesus told His followers that they had to be perfect like the Father in heaven (see Matthew 5:48). Then, if we have to be perfect the way God is, all we need to do is emulating Him in our lives and dealing with our fellow men. Were God so harsh towards the sinner, we too would definitely have to be so. However, God is so loving, merciful, patient in His dealing with us. So, why aren’t we this way? You see, we have really drifted away from God on account of our sins. Now, God wants us once again to be like Him. Do you remember how humans were like when He created them? The Bible says: “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” Genesis 1:26. Note that the human beings were to be like God. I say “They were to be like God” because we are no longer like Him due to this sin, which has caused separation from our Creator God. You say “How is that?” Well, just remember that the image of God is not merely human appearance. Firstly, it cannot connote human appearance, for John says that God is spirit (see John 4:24). Secondly, it’s far from human appearance because still within the same verse, God highlights that His ruling of the Earth was to be given to the humans, for them rule like He Himself. But do we have this ruling over the entire Planet? Of course not! Evidently, something has gone wrong with our likeness with God. Thirdly, God is perfect but we are not. That’s why God wants us to once again be as perfect as He is. Most importantly, being perfectly like God is the key to everything‒that is, only by being as sinless, perfect, holy as God can we then get to SEE and LIVE with God (I say it for those of us who long to see God. I guess all of us do. Don’t we?). Upon its fulfillment, this will literally be the end of sin, suffering, death. Isn’t that good news? Only by dying to self through Christ’s strength, can we then be perfect and experience the End of Sin.
Oh that we would recover the image/likeness of God in our lives!
